Junk Journal: Beastiary

There be beasties in those woods! I love mythology and fantasy, and thought it would be great to make a kind of ‘Beastiary’, in the style of a dossier sorta thing, much like something Mulder would knock together (if you don’t know who Mulder is, we can’t be friends).

I started with an existing cardboard journal cover (from one of my ill fated attempts to attend university), stripped out the very old diary inside, and set about creating a compendium of critters.

Also, check out the bottom of the post for my YouTube video flip through!

The Theme

I had a particular theme in mind, or rather particular ‘beasties’ I wanted to include, which helped me find a starting point. I swear this time I tried to use gungy colours, but green kept finding me.

The theme is overarchingly Celtic (my family is Scottish/Irish), with a kind of 40’s vibe. Think Film Noir, but X-Files style. Now that I think about it, the X-Files WAS very film noir. Anyway, back on track!

Favourite feature

Without a doubt the ‘slides’. I had a dream about how I would make them, found a cutting plate online, and got to work. I LOVE how they turned out, and I plan to make more for future projects.

I also couldn’t find something suitable for the “Beastiary” cover, so I hand made the emblem with hot glue and paint. ‘Twas peak “let’s see how this goes” creativity and I’m happy it turned out so well! I think something like UV resin would have been easier to work with, but I don’t need to be collecting ANOTHER hobby.

Will there be a part 2?

I’ve already started collecting pieces for a marine based beastiary, and have started work on a Dragon one. Stay tuned to see how they turn out!
